Valve leakage is one of the most common but misdiagnosed rod pump problems. Leakage from the traveling valve, standing valve, or both drops production and changes card shapes in ways that can look like gas interference or pump-off until you know the specific signatures. Distinguishing which valve is leaking points directly at the fix.
What Each Valve Does
The standing valve opens on the upstroke to let fluid into the barrel and closes on the downstroke to trap it there. The traveling valve opens on the downstroke to let fluid pass up through the plunger and closes on the upstroke to lift the fluid column above it.
Either valve can leak. A leak means fluid passes through when the valve should be closed. Each produces a distinct failure signature.
Traveling Valve Leakage
On the upstroke, a leaking traveling valve allows fluid to drain back down through the plunger as the string rises. The rod string does not pick up full fluid load. Card signature: reduced load on the upstroke, slow load pickup near the top of the stroke, decreased card area.
On the downstroke, with a leaking traveling valve the fluid still passes through as designed. The downstroke looks relatively normal. Contrast between the reduced upstroke load and normal downstroke load points at the traveling valve.
Standing Valve Leakage
On the downstroke, a leaking standing valve lets fluid back out of the barrel as the plunger descends. The barrel empties partially through the standing valve. When the next upstroke begins, the barrel is not full - the pump behaves as if fillage were low.
Card signature: looks similar to poor fillage or gas interference - rounded, elongated, reduced area. The distinction from gas interference comes from fluid level data. High fluid level with rounded card could be either. An operator-level tests can distinguish them.
On-Site Test
Stop the pump with the rod string at the top of stroke. Wait. If the rod string slowly sinks, the traveling valve is leaking (fluid is draining through it). If the string stays at position but annular fluid level drops, the standing valve is leaking (fluid is draining out of the barrel). If neither, both valves are holding.
This test takes minutes and costs nothing. It distinguishes the two leakage modes directly. Most operators who run it on a struggling well identify valve problems within the first few tests.
Why Valves Leak
Debris on valve seat preventing closure (sand, scale fragments). Wear from abrasive fluid eroding seat and ball contact. Cavitation damage from chronic fluid pound (ball and seat pitting). Valve cage cracks. Wrong metallurgy for the service.
Bottom Line
Valve leakage mimics other failure modes on the surface card but has distinct signatures once you know where to look. The on-site sink test distinguishes traveling valve from standing valve leakage in minutes. Prevention centers on fluid pound control (to prevent cavitation) and debris management (to prevent seat fouling). Fixes range from cycle-up cleaning to pump replacement depending on damage level.
